What are Removable Dentures and How are They Done?
The loss of a tooth, partially or fully, affects the patient’s image and makes the patient more prone to developing health problems. Especially if the patient ignores the tooth loss and leaves it untreated. Thanks to dentures, they provide a guaranteed solution for treating specific cases of tooth loss. Dentures are removable replacements of missing teeth and their surrounding tissues. Creating removable dentures takes a few weeks and various visits to the dental clinic. Once the prosthodontist decides which type of removable denture fits the patient, the following steps are carried out. The dentist takes multiple impressions of the patient’s jaw and measurements of the space between them. Then, the dentist creates models of the denture’s shape and the patient should try it on in order to conduct the needed modifications. After the modifications are noted, they are implemented and the final denture is ready.
Types of Removable dentures:
Complete/Full Dentures
Full removable dentures have two main types, immediate or conventional. Immediate dentures are made beforehand and can be placed once the teeth are removed. Whereas the conventional denture can be placed 8 to 12 weeks after the patient’s teeth have been removed.
The immediate denture acts as a temporary solution to help the patient move to successful denture wearing. Due to the natural shrinking process of the gums in the area of the missing tooth or teeth, the dentures that are placed immediately after extracting the tooth do not fit as properly as permanent dentures when the healing process is complete. Thanks to immediate dentures, patients don’t have to stay without teeth for a long time until conventional dentures are finalized.
After 8 to 12 weeks, permanent dentures that fit the patient’s mouth perfectly and accurately can be designed. They look and function like natural teeth.
There are also implant-supported overdentures. They give more stability to the denture and make it more secure using two or more dental implants.

Partial Dentures
Removable partial dentures are generally made of replacement teeth that are attached to gum-colored bases. Based on the patient’s needs, the dentist designs a partial denture. The partial denture can have clasps that attach to the patient’s teeth, or different and more natural connectors. In certain cases, a removable partial denture attaches to the patient’s natural teeth with precision attachment. They are more aesthetic than clasps.
There are two types of removable partial dentures. Transitional partial dentures and removable partial dentures.
Transitional partial dentures are made of plastic and they act as a temporary tooth replacement until the patient’s mouth heals from extracting the tooth (or teeth). After healing, the dentist places dental implants (if needed).
However, removable partial dentures are made of vitallium. They are lighter and not as obvious as the plastic in transitional dentures.
Types of Removable Dentures Material
There are two main types of material that make up removable dentures. Acrylic and chrome cobalt.
Acrylic
When patients want to choose between acrylic and chrome cobalt dentures, one critical factor they should take into consideration is their current number of teeth. If they have no teeth, then the right option to go with is acrylic dentures. Unlike chrome cobalt dentures, acrylic dentures don’t need to be supported by any teeth. However, if there are a few teeth remaining, cobalt dentures is the option to go with.
Chrome Cobalt
Chrome cobalt dentures are the strongest and last for a long time. They also cause no irritation in patients’ gums or mouths.
Generally, partial and single tooth dentures are made of chrome cobalt. The best thing about chrome cobalt dentures is that chrome is thin, which makes the dentures feel less bulky. Moreover, they are hardly noticeable inside the mouth.
